Freedom Project - 7th-27th February

the brief

We’re delighted to announce that this month’s project is in collaboration with Asos.com, the UK’s premier destination for fashion online. Asos are a leading light in supporting emerging talent in the industry having put their weight behind such rising stars as Holly Foulton and Ostwald Helgason. Now they’re opening their arms even further, giving any emerging designer or artist around the world a chance to see their work brought to life and sold on Asos.com by utilising our unique design platform and reaching out to you.

We’ve designed a capsule collection exclusively for Asos and they’re challenging you to create the print designs that will breathe life into these pieces.

The collection is based around free and floating silhouettes in sheer, feminine silks, perfect for Spring/Summer. We’re looking for print designs that will echo the freedom of spirit that such garments embody, capturing their essence and complementing their form.

From the forces of nature, to a sun set on an alien planet, to the way ink moves through water, there are endless sources of inspiration for beautiful print designs of this type. Whatever inspiration point you decide to use, make sure you pay particular attention to colour palette and texture, always keeping the end product in mind. We have prepared a mood board to help get you started and you may also find looking to the catwalk useful, researching the work of designers such as Matthew Williamson, who have embraced this style of design.

The project will run from February 7th-27th on BetaFashion.com. Once the entry deadline has closed 20 submissions will be shortlisted and published on the site where they will be given 1 week for public evaluation. This feedback will assist Asos in making their final selection.

There are 6 prizes on offer. First prize winner will be commissioned by Asos to do a print series based on their winning submission, which will then form their own capsule collection and will be awarded £1200. A further 5 designs will be chosen as winners to form an additional collection, with winners receiving £300 each.

submission guidelines

Create your Design

Designs may be created by any method you wish. Feel free to experiment with drawing, painting, photography, or digital media. Designs can be for a specific all over placement or they can be repeating. Keep in mind that the design you submit onto the website is for presentation purposes only. If you are selected as a winner you will be required to send us the full resolution version of your design which must be suitable for printing on textiles at a scale of at least 1 metre square or larger. If the full resolution file cannot be printed clearly at this scale your design will be withdrawn as a winner. If you are using a raster programme such as Photoshop you must create your design in actual size of at least 150dpi. If you submit a design that appears to be a repeat we will expect it to be a true repeat unless stated otherwise by you.

Submit your Design

Starting from the 7th of February you will be able to submit your designs directly on Betafashion.com. Your submission must be comprised of certain images and text. You must submit one main image of your design as well as one small thumbnail image. Main image files must be up to 900X900 pixels and no smaller than 700X700 pixels, submitted as either a JPEG of GIF. Small image thumbnails must be 150X150 pixel JPEG’s or GIF’s. You may also submit up to two additional images to display any detail that may be lost in the main image, or in the case of repeating prints to display the repeat. Such additional images must be no larger than 700X700 pixel JPEG’s or GIF’s. As well as the images you are also required to give your design a name and description. Remember, from the moment your design is published on the site it is your opportunity to start promoting it, so a good name and description are essential. Outside viewers may also be interested to read more about your background so make sure you put thought into your user profile description.

Reasons For Decline

Original Work
Submitted designs must be your original work and must not have been previously used commercially. For more information on the legal terms and conditions of design submission please click here

Missing Files
If any of the submission files are missing or are of the wrong dimensions we may request you send them to us. If you fail to provide them then your submission will be rejected.

Submission needs work
We may feel that some submissions are not of a high enough standard to have a realistic chance of winning a competition. In this event we may decline entry and request that it is given more time and work to get it up to standard.
